Jan DE LOECKER is Professor of Economics at the KU Leuven. He is also a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). Prior to joining KU Leuven, he was a faculty member at New York University (NYU) before moving to Princeton University for nearly 10 years.  He was a visiting faculty at Yale University and Stanford University.

He specialises in the areas of industrial organisation, international economics, and development economics. His research is centered around measuring, and identifying the drivers of firm performance. In particular, he has put forward empirical frameworks to estimate productivity, marginal costs and markups, using micro-level production data. These methods have been used to study the role of technology, market power, international competition, in shaping the performance of individual producers, and industries and economies at large. He has published in leading journals and in 2016 he was awarded an Odysseus Research Grant from the Flemish Research Council. In 2019 he obtained a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant.

Jan DE LOECKER will present a paper via Zoom, joint with John AXER and Allan COLLARD-WEXLER, at the next Departmental Seminar on the theme:
