La cause est entendue : le triomphe des démocraties libérales sur le nazisme a inauguré une seconde modernité conforme aux « valeurs » de l'occident - respect des droits humains, universalité, quête du bien-être, démocratie et justice, caractères fondateurs de l'ouest face à son antagoniste soviétique. Or les continuités de carrières et d'idées interrogent : la guerre froide explique certes bien des recyclages mais il convient peut-être de réfléchir plus avant à la logique de ces rémanences. Le nazisme est-il une aberration ou un révélateur de notre modernité ?

Speaker: 

Smruti S Pattanaik  Dr Smruti S Pattanaik is a Research Fellow at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis (MP-IDSA). She holds PhD in South Asian Studies from the School
of International Studies, JNU and specializes on politics in South Asia and India’s policy
towards its Neighbours and China in South Asia.
She was a visiting Asia Fellow at the department of International Relations, Dhaka
University in 2004 and 2007, Kodikara Fellow in 1999, postdoctoral fellow at FMSH,
Paris in 2008 and visiting fellow at PRIO in 2011, Fellow at the University of Hull in
2018. She was Visiting Professor on ICCR’s India Chair in Colombo University in 2013.
She was selected to attend the prestigious Symposium on the East Asian Security (SEAS)
Program conducted by the US State Department and USPACOM in 2011. She has
lectured extensively in India and abroad on India’s foreign policy and South Asia.

 

Dr Pattanaik has published more than 100 research articles and chapters on various
aspects of politics in South Asia and have focused on India’s relations with its
neighbours. She is the author of “Elite Perception in Foreign Policy: Role of Print Media
in influencing Indo-Pak relations, 1989-99” (2004) and has edited three books titled
“South Asia: Envisioning a Regional Future” (2011) and “Four Decades of India-
Bangladesh Relations: Historical Context and Future Direction (2012), “Recounting the
Memories of Bangladesh’s Liberation War: Why It Is Still Relevant” (Routledge, 2024)
She has also authored a monograph “Afghanistan and its Neighbourhood: In Search of a
Stable Future (PRIO-IDSA, 2014)..

15h30-17h10 — The impact of identity salience on Asian experiences

 

Speaker:

Margaret Shih (Pr. of social psychology, UCLA Anderson School of Management)

 

Implicit activation of stereotypes can impact the experience of Asians in social settings.  This session explores how the activation of stereotypes related to Asian and Asian Americans impact outcomes at the individual, interpersonal and intergroup levels. We present the results of experimental studies showing that subtle cues making different social identities salient can activate stereotypes which in turn affects people’s behavior, perceptions, and judgments. We discuss implications of the findings with regards to potential self-fulfilling prophecies, potential harmful or counter-productive outcomes that might be related positive or “complimentary” stereotype content, and the impact of social cues.

17h20-19h — Chinese Migration heritage beyond borders: A view from the margins

Martina Bufolin (permanent research associate at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts)

 

For migrants and their descendants, the movements across national borders are at the core of their lived realities and as such a part of individual and collective experiences and memories. The public recognition of these and the process of attaching values to them through heritage-making may be attributed to the multiculturalist turn in contemporary diversified societies. The talk examines this phenomenon through the heritage-making of the Chinese migration and argues for an understanding of migration heritage that forgoes the binary opposition between migrants' place of origin and their settlement and focuses on the connections within the migration process. In a departure from most of the literature on migration heritage, the talk also looks at this process from the margins (be it geographical or social) as a potentially novel and productive way to examine migration heritage-making in contemporary European societies.
