Graduate Admissions: Motivation Letter
You must write your motivation letter(s) directly in the designated section of your online application. If you are applying to two programmes, you are required to submit two separate motivation letters, each in its respective section. Some programmes require a choice of a specialty. In this case, you may be required to write an additional motivation.
Make sure you write your letter in the language requested for the programme. Applications that do not meet this requirement will be deemed incomplete and will not be considered for evaluation
Do not exceed the word limit indicated in the section "Personal statement" of your online application.
Your motivation letter should reflect a well-informed understanding of the programme and show a clear idea of the professional field you are aiming for and state clearly which aspects of your personality or background have led you to this choice. The letter should enable us to clearly assess the following:
- Your background and personal journey: you are expected to describe the specific aspects of your personality and prior experiences that have led you to apply to Sciences Po and to this particular programme. Please highlight any relevant academic, extracurricular, or professional experiences that are directly connected to your project.
- Your academic interests and understanding of the programme: clearly explain which aspects of the programme appeal to you—such as the curriculum, academic objectives, or pedagogical approach—and why this programme is a meaningful and coherent step in your academic journey. Applicants are expected to demonstrate that they have thoroughly researched the programme in order to substantiate their motivation.
- The alignment between the programme and your professional goals: it is important that you articulate your professional aspirations and explain how this programme will help you achieve them. Be as specific and forward-looking as possible
- Your contribution to the programme and community: explain how you believe your background, experiences, and perspective will enrich the Sciences Po community, the programme, and your fellow students This may include your perspective, experiences, values, or ambitions that will enrich the academic and social environment.
Assessors read a huge number of motivation letters every day, so they much prefer those written with care. The motivation letter must be carefully written, both in form (spelling, paragraphs, etc.) and in substance (the clarity of ideas and structure of arguments). Your motivation letter must demonstrate authenticity and sincerity
