LIEPP/OSC Visiting Professor from November 14th to December 14th 2016
Aliya Saperstein, Assistant Professor à l'Université de Stanford, est invitée par l'axe Discriminations et Inégalités Sociales du LIEPP et l'OSC du 14 novembre au 14 décembre 2016. Titulaire d'un PhD en sociologie et démographie à l'Université de Californie-Berkeley, Aliya mène des recherches sur les dynamiques des systèmes de catégorisation tels que la race et le sexe et leurs conséquences sur les inégalités sociales.
Elle a reçu, en 2016, le prix Early Achievement Award de la Population Association of America. Elle a également été, la même année, professeure invitée à la Russel Sage Foundation.
Ses recherches portent sur les processus sociaux par lesquels les critères de différence à priori immuables, tels que la race et le sexe, sont perçus, nommés et utilisés ainsi que leurs conséquences pour expliquer et renforcer les inégalités sociales. Son projet actuel explore plusieurs éléments de ce sujet dont :
• La relation entre la fluidité raciale au niveau des individus et le maintien de frontières de groupes, les stéréotypes raciaux, et les hiérarchies.
• Les impacts des décisions méthodologiques, notamment la mesure race/ethnie et sexe/genre dans des recensements, pour des études de stratification et de disparité sanitaire.
Ces travaux de recherche ont déjà été publiés par des revues en sciences sociales telles que The American Journal of Sociology, The Annual Review of Sociology, Demography,et Gender & Society, dans d'autres domaines, ou pour un public plus large au sein de National Academy of Sciences et PLoS One. Ce travail a reçu plusieurs récompenses, et a attiré l'attention des médias au niveau national, y compris NPR et Colbert Report.
Aliya Saperstein présente ses travaux au cours du séminaire joint LIEPP/OSC Racial Mobility : the Dynamics of Race and Inequality le 18 novembre 2016. Elle participe aussi au Workshop : Gender Inequality in Interdisciplinary Perspective organisé par le LIEPP le 8 décembre 2016.
Aliya Saperstein, Assistant Professor at Stanford University, is LIEPP-OSC Visiting Professor from November 14th to December 14th 2016. She received her B.A. in Sociology from the University of Washington and her Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography from the University of California-Berkeley. In 2016, she received the Early Achievement Award from the Population Association of America. She has also been a Visiting Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation.
Her research focuses on the social processes through which people come to perceive, name, and deploy seemingly immutable categorical differences - such as race and sex -and their consequences for explaining, and reinforcing, social inequality. Her current research projects explore several strands of this subject, including:
- The relationship between individual-level racial fluidity and the maintenance of group boundaries, racial stereotypes, and hierarchies.
- The implications of methodological decisions, especially the measurement of race/ethnicity and sex/gender in surveys, for studies of stratification and health disparities.
This research has been published for social science audiences in the American Journal of Sociology, the Annual Review of Sociology, Demography,and Gender & Society, among other venues, and for general science audiences in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and PLoS One. It also has been recognized with multiple article awards, and gained attention from national media outlets, including NPR and The Colbert Report.
During her stay in LIEPP/OSC, she presented her paper entitiled Racial Mobility: The Dynamics of Race and Inequality, in a seminar organised by LIEPP/OSC on November 18th 2016, and participated at the Workshop: Gender Inequality in Interdisciplinary Perspective organised by LIEPP on December 8th 2016.
