Meet the Graduates 2025: Mónica Velarde Miranda

How can gender perspectives reshape climate and urban policies? In this interview, Mónica Velarde Miranda, a recent graduate from the Master in Environmental Policy at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), originally from Costa Rica, reflects on how the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies deepened her commitment to intersectional climate action and shaped her next steps.
Why did you choose to pursue the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies in addition to your Master's Programme?
Because integrating a gender perspective into climate and urban policies is not optional, it’s essential. The Certification gave me the analytical tools to push for more inclusive, resilient public policies.
Was there a specific gender studies course that had a lasting impact on you?
Yes, the “Gender Equality in Sustainable Economies” class taught by Eva Bernard. It opened my eyes to the multiple layers of injustice – environmental, social and gender-based – and strengthened my commitment to intersectional climate action.
If you had to choose a favourite memory from your time at Sciences Po, what would it be?
The time spent in class discussions, discovering new ways of thinking and seeing the world... but also building friendships that will stay with me for life.
In one sentence, what guidance would you share with upcoming students?
Don’t wait to be “ready” – speak up, apply, and absorb all the information you can.
Where do you see yourself heading next?
I’m currently looking for a job where I can make a meaningful difference in the fields of gender and climate change adaptation – I'm ready to contribute my part to building a more just and resilient world.
