Meet the Graduates 2025: Andrea Hummel

As part of our spotlight on students completing the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies at Sciences Po, we spoke with Andrea Hummel, a recent graduate from the Master's in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action. She shares how the Certification has enriched her academic journey and tells us about her professional plans in Paris.

What motivated you to complement your master’s degree with the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies?

I chose to pursue the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies because, as a student in the Human Rights and Humanitarian Action Master's Programme, I believe a gender lens should be applied to every human rights issue. I hope to pursue a career addressing social issues and promoting gender equality, and the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies has helped equip me with the tools and knowledge to do so!

Which gender studies class left the strongest impression on you?

I particularly enjoyed my course on Gender and Conflict with Elisabeth Marteu. Learning about the highly gendered components of war, conflict and peace negotiations truly highlighted the value of gender studies.

If you had to give one piece of advice to future cohorts, what would it be?

Stay true to yourself and your moral compass, and don’t be disheartened if others don’t see the value in what you choose to study.

What are your next steps after Sciences Po?

I am planning to continue working at the diversity, equity and inclusion think tank where I have been pursuing my apprenticeship: l'Association Française des Managers de la Diversité (AFMD) [in English: French Association of Diversity Managers] in Paris!
