This chart demonstrates several characteristics of global military power. Two regions are largely absent from the military build-up: Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. But, these two regions are also plagued by more informal daily forms of violence. The concentration of armed forces in Europe even 30 years after the end of the Cold War may surprise many. The rest of the world contains three geographical concentrations of potential conflict: The Middle East, South Asia, and the Pacific Rim of Asia.
