The seminar, entitled “Constitutional Courts and European Courts: Adjudication Facing Automation and Autonomous Systems,” explores how artificial intelligence and automation are progressively reshaping judicial processes, the structure of adjudication, and the constitutional role of courts, particularly with regard to the protection of fundamental rights and the principle of separation of powers.
The aim is to reflect on how constitutional and European courts must confront algorithmic decision-making, automation in dispute resolution, and the emergence of AI-assisted or partially automated adjudicatory environments, taking into account both the opportunities and the risks for the rule of law and democratic legitimacy.
Oreste Pollicino is Visiting Professor at Sciences Po, where he teaches AI and the Rule of Law, and Full Professor of Constitutional Law and Regulation of Artificial Intelligence at Bocconi University. Since 2020, he has also served as Director of the LL.M. in Law of Technology and Automated Systems and Co-Director of the Research Unit on Law and Economic Studies (RULES).
In 2014, he uniquely obtained the Italian national qualification as Full Professor in three distinct legal fields—Constitutional Law, Comparative Law, and European Union Law. He is among the most cited constitutional law scholars in Europe on issues concerning the protection of fundamental rights online, digital technologies and AI governance, and the fight against disinformation.
This event is organised as part of the TIERED programme.
Venue: Room 410T (Sciences Po, 13 rue de l'Université, Paris 7ème) and online.
