Gotham City: a city of justice, a city of love, a city of peace. Ever since it made its first appearance in the DC comics universe in 1940, millions of readers and watchers know that the fictional truth is far removed from this lyrical description. Designed to evoke resemblances with any major US city, Gotham is characterized as a place of immorality and inequality, in which crime and corruption transcend all echelons of society and governance. Central to Gotham’s narrative is the Batman, a social justice vigilante driven by vengeance. Operating in the shadows of the law to settle scores between the upper and underworld, Batman is the personification of the normative greyness in which the city is submerged. Numerous film directors have been inspired by the ambiguity of Gotham and the Batman; from Leslie H. Martinson’s camp 1966 ‘Batman: The Movie’, to Christopher Nolan’s more recent and grim trilogy.
To discuss the Batman saga and its potential for critical reflection, the Law and Cinema Club has invited Professor Camil Ungureanu of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona to share his passion for political philosophy, literature, cinema, and Batman.
For this special occasion, we invite all faculty, staff and PhDs to re-watch their favourite Batman film, and join us for an engaging conversation.
We hope to see you then!
