Master of Sociology
The Master of Sociology trains students to conduct quantitative and qualitative investigations, carry out independent research, present and communicate results and work as part of a team.
At Sciences Po, sociology is a discipline based on practice, theory, and methodology. The two-year Master's program focuses on the social relevance of research issues: it provides a solid foundation in classical and contemporary social theory and modern analytical tools in both quantitative and qualitative
methods. Very early on in their studies, students are encouraged to engage in field research through ethnographic studies, interviews, surveys, and extensive database studies. Particular importance is attached to the research thesis, which
must be based on the student's empirical work and/or surveys based on high-level academic data. The subjects of study are varied and reflect the very broad spectrum of topics covered by the sixty or so researchers and teacher-researchers in the Department of Sociology at Sciences Po.
Courses are taught in English and French. Students may use either English or French for exams, research projects, and the thesis. In order to facilitate the integration of non-French-speaking students, most first-year courses are taught in English.
Graduates of the Master's in Sociology program are particularly well prepared to pursue their academic careers at the doctoral level, join large organizations and public bodies, and work for research institutes at the national or international level.
