Thematic selection - Relationships between humans and other animals

The relationship between humans and other animals is highly cultural and varies from one era to another. Humans are often considered superior to animals, especially in the West, and endowed with special abilities. 

In some cases, this dichotomy has been used to justify the mistreatment of farm animals, for example. The recent notion of animal welfare has become as much a political slogan as a marketing argument.

Animal rights activists are now calling for a specific legal status linked to its nature as a sentient animal, and for special protection measures.
