Building Bridges: Mandate Interpretation and Multinational Collaboration
in UN Peace Operations

How do peacekeepers from different nationalities interact with one another and translate an ambiguous mandate into effective action? This is the topic of the research brief on ‘Mandate Interpretation and Multinational Collaboration in the UN mission in Mali’, that forms the basis for this panel discussion.

Over the last two decades, peace operations have not only become larger and more complex but also more multinational. This provides both opportunities as well as challenges for a successful mandate implementation on the ground. The research brief makes three policy recommendations: 1) to promote cohesion and increase understanding of peacekeeping mission goals the UN should actively promote bridge-building between units from different national contexts; 2) higher levels of cultural diversity should counter stereotypes between units from different parts of the world; and 3) specific pre-deployment training and socialization can help overcoming such stereotypes.

The aim of this moderated panel discussion is to discuss how to translate these recommendations on diversity in UN peacekeeping into action to ensure effective and successful peace operations.

The hybrid event is organised jointly by the Challenges Forum and Sciences Po Paris and sponsored by the Swedish Defence University and the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the Swedish government agency for peace, security and development. The event will be livestreamed on social media.
