Biopolitics of Putinism: the case of Russo-Ukrainian war

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 revived the debate about the totalitarian potential of post-liberal democracies, manifesting a new type of biopolitics generated in a European country that experienced a short-lived liberal modernization but soon chose the way of mass violence. Violence is an integral part both of Russia’s history and of the country’s policy in its “near abroad,” which it inherited from its previous imperial constructions along with the phantom pains of their losses. The paper argues, that the current Putinist biopolitics toward Ukraine can be understood as racism of the post-Soviet traumatic disorder, which in a context of Russo-Ukrainian war, brings eschatological narratives and zoepolitical thinking to the forefront of domestic discourse.
