Son of an Admiral close to the fascist milieu, Count Ciano married in 1936 Mussolini’s elder daughter. He was consul in Shanghai (from 1930 to 1935) and Minister of Culture from 1935 to 1936, then Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1943, he was put aside from his ministerial functions and nominated ambassador to the Holy See. In July 1943, he voted for the motion of the “council of fascism” asking Mussolini to resign and to give over all his crafts to the king and the army, trying so to prevent his father-in-law to remain allied with Germany. Arrested by the Germans, he was given over to the Republic of Salo and shot by gun.
