The New Season of Our Research Podcast Focuses on Digital Transformations

The first episode of the new season of the podcast “Conversations with Sergei Guriev” features Raphaële Xenidis, an Assistant Professor at Sciences Po's Law School, and focuses on algorithmic discrimination.

“Conversations with Sergei Guriev” is a podcast created in 2023 in which Sergei Guriev, Provost of Sciences Po, discuss with our researchers about the change that is happening in our societies and to our societies.

Algorithmic discrimination, a complex and critical issue

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology and its impact on society, the topic of algorithmic discrimination has emerged as a critical concern. As our societies navigate this era of digital transformation, it becomes increasingly evident that algorithms, designed to streamline processes and make decisions, can also perpetuate and even strengthens biases and inequalities present in society. From facial recognition systems to recruitment algorithms, the ways in which technology interprets and acts upon data can have far-reaching consequences on individuals and communities.

In the European context, efforts such as the Digital Services Act and the AI act aim to set standards for transparency and accountability in algorithmic systems. However, the challenge lies in translating legal and ethical concerns into effective technical standards that uphold fundamental rights and prevent harm. The path towards combating algorithmic discrimination requires a multifaceted approach that considers not only the technical aspects but also the social, legal, and ethical dimensions of this complex issue.
