8 essential tools

As a member of the Sciences Po community, you will use many digital tools, including Gmail, Zoom videoconferencing, and Google Drive for storing and sharing documents.

This page provides a list of the eight tools you absolutely must know to get off to a successful start with digital technology at Sciences Po.

Your Sciences Po account is the key that gives you access to all digital tools. It consists of:

  • a username: your email address prenom.nom@sciencespo.fr
  • a personal password

All Sciences Po campuses offer full Wi-Fi coverage. By logging in using their Sciences Po account (email address/password), administrative staff use the ‘FNSP’ network, while students, teachers and researchers can use the ‘Sciences Po Secure’ and ‘Eduroam’ networks (Eduroam is also available in many universities membres du partenariat Eduroam).

Sciences Po is a Google partner and offers members of its community access to Google tools. The email service used within the institution is therefore Gmail. Email addresses are all structured in the same way: prenom.nom@sciencespo.fr.

Sciences Po uses Google Drive to store, share and enable collaborative office work via ‘Google Docs’. Drive allows multiple users to work simultaneously on office documents (Google Docs for word processing, Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Google Slides for presentations, etc.).

Documents will sometimes need to be shared between several people. It is therefore essential to be very rigorous in managing sharing rights and to maintain full control over these shares.

Several video conferencing tools are available at Sciences Po, but Zoom has been selected as the standard tool. It is used for:

  • Distance learning or hybrid mode courses (some students are present in the classroom and others are learning remotely)
  • Meetings and collaborative work
  • Training courses for staff, teachers and researchers

With Zoom, you can share your computer screen, write on a shared whiteboard with others, record a class to make it available later, and discover many other features.

Toshiba photocopiers are available for printing, copying or scanning documents. They are located in most of the buildings on the Sciences Po campuses.
To use them, you must unlock them using your Sciences Po card (via the card reader on the front of the copier). Remember to log out after use (by swiping your card again on the reader) without waiting for the automatic 15-second lockout period!
