Bio :

Caroline Le Pennec is an Assistant Professor of Applied Economics at HEC Montréal. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2020. She is also a member of the Center for the Study of Democratic Citizenship and an affiliate of the SoDa Labs (Monash University).

Her research is in Political Economy and focuses on the role of electoral campaigns in representative democracy. In her work, she assembles novel datasets and uses innovative empirical methods, including machine learning and natural language processing. She is particularly interested in understanding whether politicians strategically adjust their platform to win elections, and whether their campaign advertisements help voters choose the candidate whose policy positions and attributes best match their preferences.
