Ciara Luxton, PhD student in political science, welcomed to LSE as part of a doctoral exchange programme

The School of Research is pleased to announce that Ciara Luxton, a doctoral student in political science at Sciences Po's Centre for Political Research (CEVIPOF), will be hosted by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as part of a doctoral exchange programme from January to April 2026.
During her stay, she will be affiliated with the Department of Government and hosted by Professor Kai Spiekermann, a political philosopher and specialist in democratic theory. This immersion in an internationally renowned department will give her the opportunity to engage in dialogue with researchers working on normative issues in ethics, global justice and democratic theory.
Ciara Luxton will notably pursue a scientific article project selected for publication in a special issue of the Journal of International Political Theory, in conjunction with the Global Theory Forum, a programme bringing together young researchers associated with London universities. This work is fully in line with her doctoral research, which questions the scope and defence of egalitarian ideals on a global scale.
Her thesis, entitled: Getting real about equality? Defending global egalitarianism after basic equality scepticism, offers an ambitious theoretical reflection on how to defend global egalitarianism in the face of contemporary sceptical currents. By articulating normative political philosophy and debates on international ethics, she seeks to clarify what it means to ‘take equality seriously’ in a world deeply marked by asymmetries of power, resources and recognition.
Joining the political theory section of the LSE, a major centre of the analytical tradition, will allow Ciara Luxton to test her work in a particularly stimulating intellectual environment and to strengthen her collaborations within an international network of researchers.
We offer her our warmest congratulations and wish her a rich and fruitful academic stay at the LSE.
