Ma, 2018-11-06 12:30 - 14:30
CEE's General Seminar "Class and Development in Post-financial Crisis China" (PDF, 103 Ko)
Tuesday 6 November 2018, 12.30 – 2.30 pm, Sciences Po, Room Goguel, 56, rue des Saints-Pères (entrance: 27 rue Saint-Guillaume), 75007 Paris
Following the 2008 financial crisis, the so-called “China model” has been praised as a successful developmental model. However, recent national surveys between 2009 and 2014 show that the percentage of respondents who agree that the current level of inequality between rich and poor violates the principle of socialism has swelled from 26% to 41%. In this talk, Ya-Wen Lei will explain how the developmental strategies in post-financial crisis China have led to class-based discontent, and discuss the implications of this for how we think about development in general.
