Abstract: Since the beginning of the new century, the far right has entered a new phase, which is characterized by increased heterogeneity, mainstreaming, and normalization. Although the far right itself has not changed that much, its relationship to the political mainstream has. In this lecture, I will outline the key characteristics of the fourth wave of the far right and highlight some of the consequences for the study of European party politics.

Cas Mudde is the Stanley Wade Shelton UGAF Professor of International Affairs and a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Georgia as well as a Professor II at the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) of the University of Oslo. Among his most recent publications are The Far Right Today (Polity, 2019) and (with Sivan Hirsch Hoefler) The Israeli Settler Movement: Assessing and Explains Social Movement Success (Cambridge University Press, 2021). He is a columnist for the Guardian US, a regular commentator for VoxEurop, and hos of the podcast RADIKAAL, which focuses on the radical aspects of music, politics, and sports.
