As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Internet, multilateral processes are discussing the future of its governance (the Global Digital Compact (GDC), the Summit of the Future 2024, WSIS+20, G7, etc).

But what is Internet governance

In today's interconnected world, the concept of Internet governance stands as a fundamental pillar shaping our digital landscape. Internet governance refers to the processes, policies, and mechanisms that govern how the Internet operates and evolves.

The fundamental goal of Internet governance is to ensure that the Internet remains a global resource accessible to all. This is done by encompassing a wide range of issues, including technical standards and protocols, domain names, IP addresses, cybersecurity, data privacy, online content regulation, and digital rights. The governance of the network also impacts how technologies run on the Internet (IoT, AI, blockchain, the web, etc.)

The Internet governance ecosystem operates on a series of multistakeholder models composed by governments, intergovernmental organizations, the technical community, civil society groups, businesses, and individual users. This encourages the participation of diverse stakeholders in decision-making processes and aims to foster inclusivity, transparency, and accountability in shaping the usage of the Internet.

Yet, Internet governance is a field not known by many. And as we navigate through its challenges, knowing and understanding it becomes increasingly important.

Join us on March 26th, from 17:00 to 19:00, in Room N207 at the Saint-Thomas campus for an engaging discussion hosted by the Sciences Po Cybersecurity Association (SCA) and the PSIA Tech and Global Affairs Innovation Hub, and co-organized by the French Internet Society Chapter (ISOC). Together, we will explore the world of Internet governance with representatives from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), UNESCO, and the Internet Governance Forum Multistakeholder Advisory Group (IGF MAG), analyze current and future challenges, and envision a more inclusive and secure digital future.
