Histories of economic life
This reading group and workshop meets once a month to discuss a book, another type of work or a field of research that offers a new perspective on the historical aspects of economic life, using various prisms such as rules, practical experience, knowledge or collective representations. The workshop examines how “economics”, instead of constituting an autonomous and separate sphere, makes up an essential part of the life of societies and individuals, at the crossroads between the market, law, politics and the environment. What sources, what concepts and what kinds of writing may help to renew how we conceive and expose the intertwining of commercial activities, social trajectories and power relations on a global scale?
At every session, one or more individuals select approximately fifty pages of reading material (passages from a book, chapters, articles) which participants ought to read before the seminar-workshop meets. Those in charge of the session introduce the theme and start off the discussion: different interpretations are compared, a critical assessment is conducted, and the broader implications in history and the social sciences are highlighted.
