Biography

Shreya Parikh is a scholar of race in Middle East and Africa, studying its entanglements with citizenship, nation-building, and migration. Currently, she teaches at Collège universitaire and Paris School of International Affairs and is Associate Research Fellow at Center for International Studies (CERI).

In 2024, Shreya was awarded a Dual Ph.D. in Political Science from Sciences Po Paris and in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her book project - Mirages of Race: Blackness, Citizenship, and Migration in post-Revolutionary Tunisia – compares the trajectories and experiences of Black Tunisian citizens and Sub-Saharan migrants to develop the first grounded theory of Blackness in post-2011 Tunisia.

Shreya’s research has appeared in French and English in L’Année du Maghreb, Meridians, Middle East Report, POMEPS Studies, Review of African Political Economy, Revue Tumultes, and Jadaliyya. This research has been funded by generous grants and awards from Beyond Borders Program at Zeit Stiftung, Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb, Noria Research, Global Religion Research Initiative at the University of Notre Dame, Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University, as well as multiple internal grants from UNC and Sciences Po.

Shreya is committed to engaging in public-facing scholarship. She was awarded the Maynard Adams Fellowship in 2019-2020 for translating her scholarship into impactful public debates. Her interviews have appeared on Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, Radio France, Africa Radio, and New Arab. Her essays have been published in Africa is a Country, Jacobin, and Libération.

Shreya grew up in Ahmedabad in India. She undertook her undergraduate and master’s studies at Sciences Po Paris as an Émile Boutmy Scholar. As a part of her undergraduate studies, she spent a year at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon – an experience that deeply shaped her curiosity about race-making and its impact on citizen-migrant boundaries.
