Neoliberalism and free market capitalism are increasingly subject to crossover criticism from both the left (which is nothing new) and the populist right (which is somewhat surprising).
Research on global supply chains, which have never received as much attention or been more controversial than during the past five years, reveals the appearance of a potential successor to
neoliberalism in which purchasers and suppliers are obligated to forge relationships that exceedstrictly economic terms, in what I refer to as ‘compliance capitalism’. Consequently, this paper asks whether we are in the midst of a shift that can be understood in Polanyian (1944) terms as a ‘countermovement’ that seeks to protect society and the environment.
