171108 Everyday life and politics in an enclaved urbanism: the case of Karachi
Seminar Cities are back in town "Everyday life and politics in an enclaved urbanism: the case of Karachi"
Wednesday 8 November 2017, 5 - 7 pm, Sciences Po, Salle du Conseil, 13 rue de l’Université, 75007 Paris
The speed and intensity with which present day cities are becoming socio-spatially segregated and de‑linking from the public sphere is alarming. Graham and Marvin famously describe the splintering city as an ‘archipelago of enclaves’ that is wrought with stark socio-material inequalities (Graham, S., & Marvin, S., Splintering urbanism: networked infrastructures, technological mobilities and the urban condition, Routledge, 2001). The resulting city is an ‘enclaved urbanism’- an agglomeration of privately governed and spatially distinct districts that operate through a logic of distinction between inside and outside (Murray, M. J., The Urbanism of Exception: The Dynamics of Global City Building in the Twenty-First Century, Cambridge University Press, 2017). In today’s presentation, we will study this concept of ‘enclaved urbanism’, and processes of enclavisation in more depth.Through the case study of Karachi, an insecure and conflicted Pakistani megacity, we will study how socio-political relations and everyday life is played out in enclaved urbanisms. We will also consider how processes of enclavisation re-produce urban violence and conflict in cities such as Karachi that are already characterized by heightened insecurity and urban difference.
