Lucien Thabourey

PhD Candidate

1. Research

Lucien Thabourey is a doctoral student at the Center for European Studies and Comparative Politics (CEE) at Sciences Po since September 2021. Prior to this, he completed a research thesis focused on Extinction Rebellion titled "Denouncing Climate Inaction: A Dynamic Approach to Extinction Rebellion's Repertoire." Under the supervision of Florence Faucher, his thesis explores the possibility of a "return of the State" within the environmental movement following the climate marches and acts of civil disobedience organized since 2018 in Europe and around the world. This investigation is accompanied by a reflection on the different interfaces that exist between the State and social movements, encompassing targets, repertoires, degrees of institutionalization, interactions with law enforcement of the studied movements, and the profiles of activists based on their social affiliations, educational backgrounds, and activist trajectories.

His research relies on a comparative approach (France/United Kingdom) that combines qualitative methods (interviews, observations) and quantitative methods (database construction, textual analysis of press sources and discourses).
