Julia Mlodzinski, Master in Political science (Class of 2022)

Can you tell us about your academic background? How did you become interested in political science?
I joined Sciences Po in 2016, at the Undergraduate College. Before that, I already had a keen interest in the study of societies, modes of governance and power dynamics, themes that I explored through the creation of Tolkien-inspired works of fiction. My interest in research took shape during my third year, when I became very passionate about courses in anthropology, the history of economic thought and game theory.
WHAT DID YOU GAIN FROM YOUR YEARS OF STUDY AT THE SCHOOL OF RESEARCH? WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HAVE OF YOUR SCHOOL AND YOUR CLASS?
These years of intense study have given me a greater capacity for hard work. I learned to analyse complex subjects in depth, but also to argue with nuance and defend ideas, sometimes even against the tide. Beyond my studies, I have maintained strong friendships based on mutual admiration, a taste for critical thinking, and many moments of mutual support.
WHAT EXTRACURRICULAR PROJECTS DID YOU COMPLETE DURING YOUR STUDIES?
Extracurricular projects have played an important role throughout my time at Sciences Po. During my master's degree, I was involved in setting up an official association for the School of Research (SORA, for School of Research Association). Its aim was to build bridges between students from different disciplines, promote exchanges between Master's and PhD students, as well as with faculty, administrative staff and librarians. I felt it was important to cultivate the School's multidisciplinary spirit, despite the increasingly compartmentalised structure of the academic world.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT POSITION?
Today, I am a research assistant... but in a completely different field! I work in an executive search firm, in other words, a recruitment agency. I specialise in the fashion and luxury sector and am involved in sourcing and evaluating managing directors, artistic directors and many other creative roles for Parisian and international companies.
WHAT WERE THE MAIN STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR CAREER?
The gap between the worlds of social sciences and fashion may seem wide. However, as Pierre François, Dean of the School until 2024, stated: ‘Scientific careers have a lot in common with artistic careers.’
Indeed, both are based on highly personal, almost passionate work and require a level of self-sacrifice and dedication that goes beyond traditional expectations.
I have always positioned myself as a supporter of atypical profiles, whether through my involvement in the School's research association or through my commitment to Creative Talents at Louis Vuitton and then at m-O Conseil.

« The combination of courses at the Undergraduate College and the School of Research allowed me to cultivate a multidisciplinary curiosity and a high degree of autonomy, as well as the ability to focus on fundamental issues over the long term and pay meticulous attention to detail. »

HOW HAS YOUR EDUCATION CONTRIBUTED TO THE ROLE YOU HOLD TODAY?
Although I am not currently working in academia, I draw heavily on the skills I acquired at Sciences Po. The combination of the Undergraduate College and the School of Research programmes has enabled me to cultivate a multidisciplinary curiosity and a high degree of autonomy, as well as the ability to focus on fundamental issues over the long term and pay meticulous attention to detail.
Would you have any advice for a student who wants to pursue a career in the sector you work in today?
The most important thing is that your choices are in line with your current aspirations, whatever they may be. If your heart isn't in it, you will only move forward at the cost of exhaustion. If research is a path you wish to explore, take the time to satisfy your curiosity. If it turns out that a PhD isn't the right path for you, you'll have gained unique experience and solid methodological skills.
The transition to the fashion and luxury sector was not easy. It required a significant repositioning, but this challenge cemented my discipline and motivation. Without this detour into research, which was so important to me, I would probably not have been able to express my ideas with such conviction or offer the analytical perspective that my colleagues now appreciate.
