À travers Elena Zhemkova, c’est toute l’organisation Memorial que Sciences Po veut honorer.

La laudation sera prononcée par Sabine DULLIN, professeure des universités à Sciences Po, directrice du département d'histoire et historienne de la Russie.

Depuis les années de la Perestroïka, l’organisation Memorial, à Moscou et dans toutes les régions de Russie, écrit l'histoire des crimes de masse et des répressions politiques en URSS, défend dès qu'ils sont menacés les droits humains et, reliant travail de mémoire et construction de la société civile, s'emploie depuis plus de trente ans à tourner la page du totalitarisme en Russie. 

La décision de dissolution de cette association, en décembre 2021, par les autorités russes, confirmée en appel le 28 février 2022, quatre jours après le début de l’agression contre l’Ukraine, est une atteinte intolérable à la mémoire historique, aux libertés académiques et à la liberté d’expression.

Elena Zhemkova a accepté de recevoir ce doctorat honoris causa au nom de l’organisation Memorial. Elle a bien voulu venir jusqu’à nous, en dépit des difficultés et des risques que représente pour elle un tel voyage.

are pleased to invite you to the awarding ceremony of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Sciences Po to Elena ZHEMKOVA, Executive Director of Memorial International.

Through Elena Zhemkova, it is the entire Memorial organisation that Sciences Po wants to honour.

The laudation will be pronounced by Sabine DULLIN, Professor of Modern History of Russia, Head of the Department of History.

Since the Perestroika years, the organisation Memorial has been working in Moscow and across all regions of Russia to write the history of mass atrocity crimes and political repression in the former USSR. It has defended human rights whenever they are threatened and, binding together the tasks of remembrance and of civil society-building, has spent more than 30 years labouring to turn the page on totalitarianism in Russia.
 
The decision to dissolve the organisation, ordered by the Russian authorities in December 2021 and confirmed on appeal on 28 February 2022, constitutes an unacceptable attack on historical remembrance, academic freedom and freedom of expression.
 
Elena Zhemkova has agreed to receive this doctor honoris causa on behalf of Memorial as an organisation. Despite the difficulties and risks that the journey will pose for her, she was willing to come all the way to Paris for the occasion.
