Sciences Po’s Atelier de cartographie has won a Google Research Award of 50 000 euros.
For one year, the Atelier de Cartographie will work with Google to improve the graphic representation of world data (from the World Bank, Eurostat, OECD, UNDP, etc.) accessible via Google Public Data Explorer. This site presents data in the form of tables, graphics and dynamic, interactive maps.
The main axes of the project are:
- displaying relevant and diversified cartographic responses based on data selected
- choice given to the user between different methods of classing statistical series
- the option of using different types of projections
- representation of exchange flows.
The results of this work will allow students, researchers, teachers and indeed any user around the world to easily and simply produce high quality cartographic representations on demand.
More generally, the project will contribute to the development of other Google tools such as Google Visualizations toolkit and Google maps API.

Google and Sciences Po :
The Google Research Award consolidates a multi-level cooperation between Sciences Po and Google:
A partnership between Google and the Sciences Po School of Journalism, aimed at promoting innovation in information models on social networks. The first milestone in this relationship was the award of a joint prize for innovation in journalism on 2 December 2011. A jury made up of professional journalists selected the “Villeneuve 5/5” project entered by a group of students from the Grenoble School of Journalism in the “students” category and the “Faux-Facebook of the Woerth-Bettencourt Affair” in the “professionals” category, entered by two journalists from Slate.fr. Google and the Sciences Po School of Journalism also awarded three merit scholarships to students from the School of Journalism. A scholarship to assist entrepreneurial journalists will also be granted in May 2012 for “information start-up.”
