International Symposium : 1991 and the collapse of the Soviet Union through the prism of political, social and cultural transformations (1970-1991)
Twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union (1918-1991), it seems relevant to ask whether 1991 can be singled out as a crucial date in the history of the Soviet Union and if we have new things to say about this major event of the end of the XXth Century. The collapse of the Soviet Union has been widely studied since the beginning of the 1990s. Over these years, increasingly innovative work has been done, particularly in the field of social and cultural history, which has allowed researchers to link the social and political processes happening before Perestroïka and the collapse of the Soviet Union . A research dossier
On the occasion of this 20th anniversary the SciencesPo Library has put online a research dossier dedicated to the event itself and the social and political developments which throughout the 1970s and 1980s led to the downfall of the communist system and the Soviet empire.
Exhibition
The SciencesPo Library is dedicating an exhibition to the ‘moment 1991’ in the showcases on the ground floor of the Library 27 rue Saint Guillaume from the 6th of December to the 3rd of February 2012. The exhibition presents items from the libraries holdings (official documents, French and Soviet press, and publications by contemporary authors) as well as loans from the collections of the BDIC (posters, photos, informal press) illustrating the last steps of the Soviet State towards its dissolution in 1991. This event is organised by the SciencesPo Library in cooperation with the History Center and the BDIC.
