As Nils Gilman recently wrote in Foreign Policy, we have entered a geopolitical cold war, in that major powers are waging through a variety of battles, at the center of which are clashing visions of the future and narratives. Within this challenging context, how can we imagineer fossil fuel futures? How can the battle of narratives be won?

This event builds on a foresight exercise conducted by Master’s students in the course International Dimensions of an Equitable Global Fossil Fuel Phase-Out, led by Céline Charveriat and Lionel Bordeaux. The students developed actionable scenarios and policy recommendations for an equitable global fossil fuel phase-out by 2050, aligned with the IEA’s 1.5°C pathways. Their findings, which were previously shared with officials at the International Energy Agency (IEA), will serve as a starting point for engaging with an esteemed panel of experts.

Following the student presentations, the event will feature a panel discussion with invited thought leaders who will share diverse perspectives on how an equitable fossil fuel phase-out can be realistically pursued by 2050. This conversation will include not only key policy perspectives but also highlight the role of narratives and culture in charting new pathways.

  • Lou Welgryn, Secretary General, Data for Good & Éclaircies
  • Olivier Truc, Writer & journalist
  • Mithika Mwenda, Director of the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance
