Gerda Falkner is the Director of the Institute for European Integration Research in Vienna. Since 1992 she has been employed at the University of Vienna, first as a researcher, and later as a professor of political science, in the Department of Government (Institut für Staatswissenschaft). In the past, she was Head of the Department of Political Science of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Vienna (2002-2008), Research group director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, in Cologne / Germany (1998-2003), and research fellow at the University of Warwick and University of Essex, England (1994-95).

Gerda Falkner serves on scientific advisory boards of international institutions (Wissenschaftszentrums Berlin, European University Institute Florence, Institut für europäische Politik in Berlin). She received several research prizes by associations (e.g. "Best Book in EU Studies" 2005/2006 by the European Union Studies Association of the USA) and Journals (e.g. JEPP 2010, JCMS 2008), alone or with teams. She is Vice President of the Austrian "European Union Studies Association" and Editor-in-chief of the refereed journals "Living Reviews in European Governance" and “European Integration online Papers”.
