Présentation de la conférence

Depuis quelques années, les experts affirment que l'Union européenne a été soumise à des tensions et qu'elle a fait preuve de résilience, subissant des "crises" nécessitant une adaptation. Les chercheurs en sciences sociales essaient de comprendre comment les tensions politiques et les contradictions politiques actuelles affectent le projet européen, maintenant que le "consensus permissif" a pris fin et que le "compromis constitutionnel" post-Lisbonne de l'UE semble fragile.

Les chercheurs réfléchissent sur l'état de l'intégration européenne dans une perspective diachronique basée sur un travail empirique ou théorique. Ils mettent en lumière l'UE en tant qu'ensemble d'institutions et de politiques avec des élites et des groupes d'intérêt intégrés dans un contexte international plus large. L'analyse de l'UE en tant que source de clivages politiques est essentielle pour comprendre le populisme, le réalignement des partis, les tensions territoriales dans de nombreux États membres, dans le contexte des inégalités au sein des États membres et entre eux.

Cette conférence aborde la relation complexe entre les dynamiques socio-économiques et le développement de l'UE, afin de comprendre les bases de l'intégration politique et ses effets potentiels. Les termes "société européenne" ou "économie européenne" reflètent-ils une réalité empirique et peuvent-ils être liés aux politiques de l'UE? En cette époque d'«illusions perdues», la conférence de Paris revient également des débats en théorie politique, juridique et sociale autour de concepts clés tels que la démocratie, l’Etat de droit et la légitimité.

La conférence offre un espace pour les chercheurs de divers horizons - science politique, histoire, sociologie, droit, anthropologie, philosophie, géographie, économie - pour présenter et discuter de la recherche axée sur les questions pressantes de l'intégration européenne. Le Groupe permanent sur l’Union européenne de l'ECPR est attaché au pluralisme méthodologique et encourage le dialogue entre disciplines académiques.

La conférence représente l'occasion pour les chercheur.e.s en sciences sociales d'échanger et comprendre comment les tensions et contradictions politiques actuelles affectent le projet européen (« crises » de l’euro,  migrations, populisme, remise en cause de l’Etat de droit, tensions territoriales dans de nombreux États membres etc.).

LIEPP in association with Centre d’études européennes et de politique comparée (CEE) co-organize the conference of European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) / Standing Group on the European Union (SGEU)  which will be held in Paris at Sciences Po from June 13th to June 15th 2018. 

The theme of the conference: Contradictions – Whither the Political, Economic and Social Integration of Europe?

Conference presentation

For some years, pundits have said that the European Union has been under stress and showing resilience, undergoing 'crises' requiring adaptation. Social scientists are trying to understand how current political tensions and policy contradictions affect the European project now that the 'permissive consensus' has come to an end, and the EU post-Lisbon 'constitutional compromise' looks fragile.

Scholars have been reflecting on the state of European integration with a diachronic perspective based on empirical work or theoretical endeavours. They shed light on the EU as a set of institutions and policies with elites and interest groups embedded in a wider international context. Analysis of the EU as a source of political cleavage are key to understanding populism, party realignment, territorial tensions in many member states, against the backdrop of inequalities within and across member states.

This conference will address the complex relationship between socioeconomic dynamics and EU developments, to understand the bases of political integration and its potential effects. Are the terms 'European society' or 'European economy' constructs reflecting an empirical reality and can they be linked to EU policies? In this era of 'lost illusions', our Paris meeting will also engage with debates in political, legal and social theory around key concepts including democracy, the rule of law, and legitimacy.

The conference provides space for researchers from various backgrounds – political science, history, sociology, law, anthropology, philosophy, geography, economics – to present and discuss cutting-edge research focused on the pressing questions of European integration. The ECPR's Standing Group on the European Union is committed to methodological pluralism, and encourages dialogue across academic disciplines.
