Francesco Giosuè

My thesis examines the transnational construction of liberalism between the Atlantic Revolutions and the Restoration. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the links between two of the main French political groups – the Monarchiens, the earliest advocates of constitutionalism at the dawn of the French Revolution, and the Doctrinaires, theorists of parliamentarism during the Restoration and the July Monarchy – whilst highlighting the transnational social networks within which they operated. Through their experience of emigration, many of these figures became key players in the transfer of political and cultural ideas across the Atlantic, particularly in Switzerland, the German states, the United Kingdom and the United States. Their movements and exchanges contributed to the spread of revolutionary and counter-revolutionary ideologies, the emergence of a new international order, and the development of innovative educational thought.
