Thibault Boulvain

Thibault Boulvain is Assistant Professor in art history at Sciences Po.

In 2017 he was awarded a PhD by the university Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His thesis focused on visual representations of seropositivity and AIDS, in Europe and in the United States, between 1981 and 1997. It was published in June 2021 under the title L’art en sida. 1981-1997 (Presses du réel, « Œuvres en sociétés »).

While still actively working on the subject – and, more widely, on visual representations of illness in history –, Thibault Boulvain has also started research on a new project entitled « ‘The Mediterranean effect’ in visual arts from the 1950’s to today ». In it, he will focus on the nature, expressions, meanings and functions of artists’ relationship to the Mediterranean, underlining how an interdisciplinary approach can confront different international creative methods with one another.

Following on from his research into representations of seropositivity and AIDS in the art of the 1980s-1990s, Thibault Boulvain is continuing his research into artistic and visual representations of the disease throughout history, in particular the ‘Spanish’ flu. He is also exploring ‘The Mediterranean effect in the visual arts from the 1950s to the present day’.
