Many societies in pre-colonial times have always celebrated gender pluralism. From the Hijra of India, to the Asog and Babaylan of the Philippines, to the Faafafine of the Samoa and the Bissu of Sulawesi Indonesia. In this public lecture we will look at the existence and the resilience of some if we may say non-normative genders and how in the cases of those that were made invisible and nearly erased have managed to come back not just in memory but in practice. We weave the stories of the trans and the queer from the deities to the servants, from the powerful to the oppressed, from the beautiful to the endangered. This lecture serves as a time capsule to the once empowered trans and queer communities of Asia and the Pacific to the tumultuous times of colonisation and modernisations of societies that consequently forced them to fight for their continued rights to exist and to love. We look at some research that documents their ongoing negotiations to be recognised in terms of their legal genders and how important it is to employ intersectional lens in fighting for multi-layered oppressions that we experience day to day. We look at the future and how these struggles can serve as prognostics for our interconnected survival and how gender is a central issue that can depower and empower all of us.
