On April 24, 2025, Marcus Lippold (European Commission) delivered a keynote presentation at Sciences Po titled “From Green Deal to Clean Industrial Deal — Enough to Ensure Europe’s Competitiveness?”, as part of a high-level event exploring the evolving architecture of the European Union’s green transition. The presentation was hosted by the European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition and aimed to assess how the European Green Deal is evolving into a broader Clean Industrial Deal (CID), focused on reconciling climate neutrality with industrial competitiveness.

The European Union (EU) and Japan have a long tradition of cooperation in the climate and energy fields. What had been described as a “partnership in the making” in 2007 has by now developed into a broad and comprehensive set of initiatives spanning across many issues in the climate and energy domain. It is now time to put these elements into practice.

The European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition, along with the European Investment Bank and Sciences Po’s Institute for Environmental Transformations, hosted an event to discuss the climate stakes ahead of COP29, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11-22 November 2024.

On 22 January 2025, we had the pleasure of celebrating the culmination of the 2024 Green Finance Challenge, an initiative launched by the European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition in partnership with HSBC Continental Europe.

Covering 41 nations – including all 27 EU member states, nine EU candidate countries, four European Free Trade Agreement nations, and the United Kingdom – the report underscores the urgency for the new EU leadership to recommit to these global targets.

It’s COP time again. For the 29th time, Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (or UNFCCC) are meeting to discuss how to reach the Convention’s ultimate objective of preventing “dangerous” interference with the climate system. While not quite as big as the record-breaking COP28 in Dubai last year, which attracted around 100,000 attendees from around the world, COP29 is still a mega-event, with an estimated 30 to 40,000 participants.
