The Chair in Sovereign Debt and Finance
The Sciences Po Chair in Sovereign Debt and Finance was established in 2019 to deepen understanding of sovereign debt and the international financial architecture, and to turn research into better policies and practices. Combining disciplinary rigour with interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches, the Chair produces rigorous, impartial, evidence-based research. It uses these insights to generate knowledge, enrich public debate, and support decision-making at the highest levels. Its work tackles some of today’s most urgent global challenges, from climate change and global poverty to rising geopolitical fragmentation. In line with Sciences Po’s vision of good governance, inclusion, and sustainability, the Chair promotes an economy that works for all.
Building on Sciences Po’s international reputation and its location in central Paris, the Chair convenes a diverse community of scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and students.
The Chair is a Sciences Po research unit and is affiliated with the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) and the Department of Economics.
Topics
The Chair’s programme of activities addresses a wide range of policy challenges. It goes beyond debt restructuring and crisis resolution to focus on debt sustainability, countries’ capacity to build resilience to future shocks – particularly those linked to climate-related natural disasters – and the mobilisation and allocation of investment for the net-zero transition.
Projects are organised around three main topics:
- debt dynamics, instruments and markets;
- debt dynamics and the international financial architecture;
- debt management, fiscal space and crisis prevention.
