Hazal Atay

Graduated from Galatasaray University in Istanbul, Turkey, Hazal has received French Embassy Scholarship to complete her master’s degree in Political Studies at Paris Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. In 2017, she started her doctoral studies in Political Science at Science Po Paris, where she specializes in Comparative Politics. Her research interrogates on gender equality politics in Turkey by scrutinizing mechanisms and patterns of how women are excluded from participating in politics, and what women’s chronic underrepresentation reveals about political life in nonconsolidated democracies. Hazal works under the cosupervision of Dr. Réjane Sénac of Sciences Po and Prof. Zehra Arat of University of Connecticut, and her research project is being financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme as per the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 665850.

In 2017, Hazal was awarded Satı Atakul Gender Studies Award by the Ankara University, Turkey for her work on the archeology of the abortion law in Turkey. In 2018, Hazal received Erasmus Plus grant for a mobility to Cambridge University where she is affiliated with the Gender Studies Center during 2019 lent term.

Her research interests englobe democratic theory, citizenship, new-institutionalism, feminist theory and gender studies.
