Biography

Martial Foucault is Full Professor at Sciences Po and was Director of the CEVIPOF from 2014 to 2024.

After obtaining a PhD in economics from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2004, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, affiliated with the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Between 2006 and 2013, he was Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Université de Montréal, and Director of the EU Centre of Excellence (McGill University/University of Montreal). Between 2016 and 2019, he was a member of the CNRS national committee for the humanities and social sciences. Since April 2021, he has been Director of the Overseas Chair at Sciences Po.

His areas of research cover political behaviours, municipal politics, public opinion, the role of emotions and trust in electoral decision-making, military sociology and, more broadly, social science methods. In 2009, Martial Foucault received the Best Young Economist Award from the International Institute of Public Finance for research funded by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) on the economic effects of decentralization in Benin. He was the recipient of the 2010 CNRS Mattei Dogan prize for his contribution to the social sciences and is the author of some sixty scientific articles in international journals, ten books and numerous contributions to public debate.

Since 2015, Martial Foucault has directed the Fait Politique collection at the Presses de Sciences Po. Between 2019 and 2021, he was a member of the CNRS national committee (section 40). In 2017, he set up a system of electoral surveys based on a large panel of French citizens, making it possible to track changes in the voting patterns of the same individuals over time, a tool hosted by the CEVIPOF.

In 2022, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Merit.
