Biography
Gwendal Châton holds a PhD in Political Science and is Maître de conférences (Senior lecturer, HDR) at the University of Rennes, as well as a researcher at the Institute of Public Law and Political Science (IDPSP). A specialist in the history of ideas and in political thought and theory, his work has focused extensively on the intellectual history of postwar French liberalism and on the political thought of Raymond Aron. He is the author of Calmann-Lévy, éditeur engagé. Défendre l’antitotalitarisme dans la guerre froide des idées (Calmann-Lévy, 2024) and Introduction à Raymond Aron (La Découverte, 2023). He has also co-edited Le revenu universel, une utopie pour le XXIe siècle ? (Berger-Levrault, 2022) and L’aventure démocratique (Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2017).
Currently on CNRS delegation at CEVIPOF/Sciences Po (2025–26), his research addresses the theme of the “crisis of democracies.” His project seeks to analyze, from a socio-historical perspective, the enduring recurrence of this theoretical concern throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and its various forms of expression across three critical moments: the interwar period, the 1970s–1980s, and the 2010s–2020s.
