Biography
Mohamed Amyn Nfaoui is a PhD candidate in political science at the CNRS, affiliated with the Center for International Studies (CERI) at Sciences Po. His research focuses primarily on political processes in Morocco and, more broadly, in North Africa and the Middle East, a region where his personal path has led him to live (Morocco, Jordan, United Arab Emirates). He also chaired the school’s association dedicated to the region, Sciences Po Monde Arabe (Sciences Po Arab World).
Trained in the humanities and social sciences, he draws on an approach combining history and political sociology. He first focused his research on the contemporary transformations of Sufism in relation to political Islam in Morocco, in a research thesis supervised by Stéphane Lacroix.
His doctoral research, currently conducted under the supervision of Hélène Combes, focuses more specifically on electoral processes in Morocco. Drawing on a socio-historical study of the act of voting and a long-term ethnographic investigation, he examines the construction of the electorate, practices of the devolution of power, and ordinary forms of political representation within the Moroccan monarchical context. He is conducting fieldwork on the September 2026 legislative elections and the September 2027 municipal elections in a predominantly rural constituency.
Thanks to this practical knowledge of the Moroccan system — its institutions and the society that runs through them — he aims to provide a close reading of contemporary Morocco.
Mohamed Amyn Nfaoui was a member of the HoRéA Maghreb 3D Doctoral Academy of the GIS MoMM, completed an exchange program at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, and is a member of the UMIFRE Jacques Berque. He also participates in the ANR research projects Verelect and Parlaf, dedicated respectively to electoral processes and the functions of parliamentarians in the Global South.
