Biography

Karine Tinat is a French sociologist and anthropologist, Professor-Researcher at El Colegio de México, where she is affiliated with the Center for Gender Studies. Trained in France and based in Mexico since 2003, she has held several senior academic positions, including Director of the Center for Sociological Studies, coordinator of academic programs, and founder of a peer-reviewed journal in gender studies (Revista Interdisciplinaria de Estudios de Género).

Her research lies at the intersection of the sociology of the body and sexuality, gender studies, and feminist theory. It focuses in particular on sexual and gender-based violence—especially rape— as well as on adolescent pregnancies, examined through life-course trajectories and family and social configurations. She has also worked on eating disorders, sex work, the relationships between sex and religion, and the work of Simone de Beauvoir.

She is the author of Las bocas útiles. Aproximaciones sociológicas y antropológicas a la anorexia and has edited several landmark collective volumes in gender studies and sexuality. A member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (Level II) and of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, she was awarded the rank of Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite (France) in 2023. Her work is grounded in an ongoing academic dialogue between Mexican and French institutions, complemented by other international invitations and collaborations.

Current Research
