Bio :

Mike Vuolo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA and Editor-in-Chief of Sociological Methodology, the official methods journal of the American Sociological Association. He received his PhD in sociology (2009), MS in statistics (2007), and MS in mathematics (2011) from the University of Minnesota. His research interests include crime, law, and deviance; health; sociology of work; substance use; and methodology. He is the author of over 70 articles examining numerous topics, such as the effect of criminal records on employment, the origins and efficacy of substance use policy in both the U.S. and Europe, and the transition from school to work. He is a mixed methods scholar, using methods as diverse as field and lab experiments, cohort and cross-sectional survey designs, content analysis, in-depth interviews, and ethnography. This work has received funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Fulbright Scholar Program. The latter resulted in ongoing collaborations with researchers in Europe at the Observatoire français des drogues et des toxicomanies in Paris and European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction in Lisbon. He was recently Chair of the American Sociological Association’s Section on Drugs and Society and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies. He stands firm in a belief that the goal of academic research is to encourage social change to improve the human condition.
