THE WORK-CARE NEXUS IN MATURE WELFARE STATES: CONTINUITY AND CHANGE (1990-2020)

The shift from Fordism to the service economy, changes in the social structure and welfare retrenchment all contributed to the rise of new social risks (NSR), exacerbating the difficulties of work-family reconciliation. At the same time, this political economy context contributed to foster a wave of reform aimed at decreasing labour market protection while expanding family policy.
The aim of my research is to better understand how mature welfare states adapted to the multifaceted changes occurred over the last three decades along the work-care nexus.
The research is structured in three steps. First, using a holistic set of macro-level indicators, it maps the evolution of labour market protection and family policy in 21 OECD countries in 1990 and 2015. Second, through a multidimensional indicator able to capture the intensity and direction of change, it characterizes country’s trajectories. Third, to complement and sharpen the findings of the quantitative analysis, it traces the process of labour market and family policy reform implemented in Italy and France since the 1990s.
