This seminar will open with the AIRE Thesis Prize Ceremony, which rewards the best Master’s thesis on environmental topics, and will then continue with a roundtable dedicated to engaging students in environmental research and teaching at Sciences Po, followed by a convivial cocktail.

The roundtable will provide a collective reflection on how environmental issues are taught and researched at Sciences Po, highlighting both pedagogical challenges and opportunities. It will bring together jury members, thesis prize laureates, and program directors to exchange perspectives on three major themes.

15h15-16h30 | Roundtable discussion: Engaging Students in Environmental Research and Teaching at Sciences Po

Balancing interdisciplinarity and disciplinarity: How can students gain solid disciplinary grounding while engaging with the inherently interdisciplinary nature of environmental issues in their research?

Balancing critical teaching with providing hope: How can the severity of environmental crises be addressed without overwhelming students? What role can pedagogy play in cultivating both critical awareness and constructive engagement? How does action research fit into the curriculum?

The Global South in Sciences Po’s environmental curriculum: Is the Global South sufficiently central in how environmental issues are taught at Sciences Po? How can it be addressed in ways that avoid tokenism, recognize diverse perspectives, and reflect the asymmetries of power, responsibility, and vulnerability in the environmental crisis?

Participants

The roundtable will gather four panelists, including jury members, thesis prize laureates, and a program director.

The discussion will be moderated by Manisha Anantharaman.

“The agents of wind: Gender perspectives on the green energy transition. An ethnography in La Guajira”
  • Second Prize – Julia KIELOCH (EAP, Master in Public Policy)
“Energy transition for whom? Examining the distribution of green subsidy schemes in Poland”
  • Third Prize – Joséphine BERTOUX (School of Research, Master in Sociology)
“We want more green, but...: Protesting urban greening in Paris”

The interdisciplinary jury was chaired by Sandrine Revet (CERI) and composed of permanent faculty members of Sciences Po (Meriem Hamdi-Cherif (OFCE), Carola Kloeck (CERI), Alain Pottage (Law School Research Center), Basak Sarac-Lesavre (CSO), Ankit Sikarwar (CRIS))

The jury evaluated the theses based on the originality and relevance of the research question, the methodology and quality of data and sources, the clarity of the argument, and the quality of the presentation.
