Cities can be approached and experienced in many different ways. Familiar perspectives often focus on history, architecture or monuments, while other layers of urban life remain less immediately visible. This webinar proposes music as a way of looking at cities differently. By paying attention to musical practices, circulations, and local repertoires, the session explores how music can reveal cultural exchanges, tensions, and overlooked layers of urban life. Through selected examples from European cities, this short seminar shows how music can open alternative perspectives on place, from transnational influences and local traditions to neighbourhood‑based musical histories and contemporary cultural uses. Drawing on examples, teaching experience, and personal encounters, the session invites participants to consider music as a lens for engaging with cities beyond what is usually seen, and to reflect more broadly on heritage, memory, cultural diversity, and the ways music is increasingly mobilised in contemporary urban contexts in Europe.
