The role of regulation in encouraging, enabling, and perhaps limiting “innovation”

On October 11, Sciences Po Law School will host the second Transatlantic AI & Law Initiative (TALI) conference. This second conference is being organized in collaboration with faculty of Paris 1. 

TALI is composed of academics based in New York, Ottawa, and Paris, and its mission is to foster practical AI research collaborations across jurisdictions and disciplines.

The general theme of our October 11 gathering will be the role of regulation in encouraging, enabling, and perhaps limiting “innovation” and what kind of innovation. (After the Draggi report was published a few weeks ago, we hope this will be an exciting issue to discuss!)

Participants will spend the morning and early afternoon (from 10 am to 3 pm) workshopping four articles in progress from local academics. The articles, by professors Ayse Gizem Yasar (LSE), Thomas Goff (Telecom Paris), Pablo Baquero (HEC), and Beatriz Botero Arcila (Sciences Po), span topics as varied as AI and sustainability, AI liability, the role of competition law in shaping generative AI and innovation policy. This is a PLSC-style, invite-only conference. 

In the afternoon, from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, we will hear from different policymakers, regulators, and members of civil society (from the OECD, Unesco, and Datasphere, amongst others!) on their perspectives on the wide topic of AI innovation and regulation.
