AI vs IA: Artificial Intelligence and Genuine International Arbitration
About this event
09 March 2022 from 18:00 until 20:00

Celebrating Lucy Reed’s residence as the first Bredin Prat Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Sciences Po Law School LLM Program in Transnational Arbitration & Dispute Settlement (TADS LLM) and Bredin Prat invite you to her keynote lecture: AI vs IA: Artificial Intelligence and Genuine International Arbitration.
Lucy Reed, one of the world’s leading arbitrators, is based in New York and specializes in investor-State and complex international commercial disputes. She is President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre Court, having formerly served as a Vice President of the ICC Court, President of the American Society of International Law, the Chair of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA), and a member of the LCIA Court and the HKIAC Board.
Artificial Intelligence is on everyone’s short list of the new things in international arbitration. The greatest focus is on delineating what aspects of AI will apply or not – will help or hurt – in our field. In this talk, Bredin Prat Distinguished Visiting Scholar Reed will instead focus on what some call the End of the Enlightenment – the ability of computers to solve a problem without humans being able to understand how or why – and explore how excessive reliance on precedents in international commercial and treaty arbitration can be a low-tech and low-value type of AI.
Bredin Prat is an esteemed partner of LLM in Transnational Arbitration and Dispute Settlement alongside other academic initiatives of the Sciences Po Law School. Founded in 1966, Bredin Prat is a Paris-based firm, globally-renowned for its expertise in litigation and arbitration, as well as for its corporate transactional work. Bredin Prat today has 200 lawyers, including 50 partners and 24 counsels.
