Elsayeh, Mohamed

PhD Candidate, Researcher

Mohamed Elsayeh is a PhD candidate at the Sciences Po Law School and currently a Teaching Fellow in law at the Sciences Po Reims campus. His doctoral research, supervised by Professors Loïc Azoulai and Helena Alviar (as principal supervisors) and Dr. Élisabeth Anstett (as minor supervisor), explores the reasons why EU law has thus far been unable to respond to the lack of identification and management of the remains of migrants who die at EU borders. The research situates the question of Europe’s ‘relationship’ to migrant remains, as well as existing narratives, at the intersection of law and policy, socio-cultural attitudes towards migrants, as well as within a historical context. It notably draws on the treatment of corpses in contexts of mass violence and genocide as well as mass disasters and pandemics.

Mohamed designed and taught the Refugee Protection seminar course at the Sciences Po Undergraduate College (Paris campus). He was a tutor at the Sciences Po Law School Clinic for the project entitled Tiers accompagnement à l’Office Français de Protection des Réfugiés et Apatrides. Mohamedhas been the Coordinator of the Migration and Diversity interdisciplinary collective at Sciences Po. He was also one of the organizers of the Law and Migration: Critical Discussions on Epistemology seminar series at the Sciences Po Law School.

In 2022, Mohamed was a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Law of the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. He serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Legal Studies, based at the EUI Department of Law.

Mohamed held various positions at inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations prior to joining the Sciences Po Law School. He has extensive experience in the field of human rights more broadly and in migrant and refugee protection more specifically.

Mohamed holds a Master of Laws in International Human Rights from the Irish Centre for Human Rights of the University of Galway and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from The American University in Cairo.
